Praying with your preschool is one of the best and easiest way to nurture spiritual development. But sometimes pray intimidates adults. Don't Stress. With preschoolers it is so easy. Why? Because young children are naturally receptive to learning about God. And because they are concrete thinkers, simple, short prayers work best. Here are three resources to support you as practice prayer at home:

  1. How to Teach Toddlers and Preschoolers to Pray
  2. A Simple Way to Teach Kids How to Pray
  3. Teaching Your Child How To Pray

what great parents do

You have probably already figured this out, but there are some characteristics that children just seem born with. These characteristics make up a child’s temperament. Some children are noisier than others. Some are more cuddly than others. Some have more regular sleep patterns than others.

There’s a great video explaining temperament below, but first, chew on these thoughts.

If you recognize and accept your child’s temperament, you are on the path to parenting greatness. Greatness being defined as parenting with wit and wisdom...picture Yoda. Here are a few reasons why:

  1. Understanding your child’s temperament can help you better understand why he acts the way he does.
  2. You can anticipate issues that might present difficulties for your child and prepare the child for the situation (or avoid it altogether if appropriate)
  3. You can tailor their parenting strategies at home (including discipline) to the particular temperamental characteristics of your child.
  4. Being aware keeps you from blaming your child (or you're parenting) for issues that are “normal” for her temperament.

Can we get real for a moment? Sometimes, our child’s temperament is not a comfortable fit for our temperament as parents. How you experienced this rub? A “slow to warm up” child can be a challenge for a parent who is the life of the party. A child who is very “active” can be draining for a parent who prefers quiet days at home.

Wise parents are attuned to the differences between themselves and their children and remain (1) flexible in their expectations and (2) provide coaching/encouragement instead of pressuring a child. If parents, for example, know their child is slow to warm up, allowing the child extra time to adapt will help the child to adjust. A child who is highly active cannot be expected to sit through a long dinner without outlets for her energy.

What WDS Believes:

God hardwired children in wonderful and unique ways. Just like snowflakes, no two children are the same. Each is unique from other children and from their parents. Children blossom when they are appreciated for who God made them to be. In equal measure, God has equipped children with the ability to grow and learn through experience with the support loving parents and teachers. Children can learn skills in areas that might not come naturally to their temperament: learning to focus attention, persist in a difficult task, make new friends in a new classroom. That’s an important part of what preschool is all about.

“For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.”
Psalm 139:13-16

But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners."  Romans 5:8

The time has finally come: the first day of Weekday School! Many of us are racing around filling out last-minute forms, purchasing those perfect back-to-school outfits, taking our little ones to get haircuts and new shoes. We are prepping our children to behave well in class, obey their teachers, share with classmates, all while hoping they don't have a potty accident. Essentially, we are putting our best selves (and children) forward, trying to make a good first impression on everyone we will encounter in the first weeks of school. I am guilty of all of these, but I remain grateful in the truth that God loves us just as we are. Even with first day of school outfits that come smeared with peanut butter, or when we're the last car in line to drop off our children, drinking cold coffee, and feeling like we are barely making it, God loves us in our mess.

 Romans 5:8 reminds us that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. God didn't wait until we behaved perfectly, or did our devotions every morning, or raised model children, to show this deep love for us. He did so while we were mired in sin, and he continues to show us this love every day to us despite our flawed state. Additionally, God's love is not based on us at all. God loves us simply because of the fact that "God is love" (1 John 4:8). We are simply the recipients of this gift, no matter what.  I am humbled to be loved in such a way and grateful I don't have to put on an act to receive this love; It just flows freely.

Let's extend the same love and grace to one another this school year, and love one another the way we are, flaws and all. And while we are shopping for new school wardrobes or making a trip to Pigtails and Crewcuts for that back-to-school trim, let's remind our children that God loves them exactly as they are, as well.

Hello, Weekday School Parents! Welcome to the first newsletter of the 2017-18 school year. We use several forms of communication to keep in touch with you including Sunday email reminders, flyers in school bags, text/emails from Kaymu. The  purpose of our digital newsletter is to inspire and encourage you as parents. I hope you will find it to be a helpful guide.

As I was digging through some family photos last week, I unearthed this picture of my daughter with beloved WDS teacher, Betty Magee.

Mrs. Magee taught at Weekday School for over 30 years. She was a masterful teacher who had a keen understanding of how to wrangle a group of three year olds. This hand puppet mouse was named “Squeaky” (if my memory serves me correctly) and he was shy and didn’t like loud noises. He would only come out to say hello to the children if they were being quiet. Do you see brilliance of this classroom management strategy?

What I love about this picture is that demonstrates the magic of the preschool years. I use the word “magic” intentionally. It is a season of suspended reality - where imagination, pretend, and play are all the rage.

My hope and prayer for this year is we would ENJOY preschool together - teachers, children, and parents. It’s not always easy to parent or teacher preschoolers, but it is extremely rewarding. They are so free with their affection and giggles.

“Will you play with me?”
“Will you read this to me?”
“Watch me!”

They are open and eager to have us in their world. They look up to us and imitate everything (!) we do. It’s a magical, delightful, wonderful stage. Let’s ENJOY it together.

To start, I want to invite you to join us for the Prayer Walk on Wednesday, August 16 from 10:00 - 10:30am under the Angel Wing. This is an annual tradition where staff, parents, and children gather for a brief devotion and prayer followed by a self-guided walk through the halls of Weekday School to pray over classrooms and the people who will occupy them.

We are counting the days until school begins and thanking God for YOUR children. It’s going to be a wonderful year!

In Christ,
