what's shakin - july 2016 - from the director

Vicki Rutledge

A change of pace. I think that’s what I enjoy about summer. The change of pace works magic for me. When things slow and quiet down, I get thinking time. And I get whitespace to putter around at home, take my time in the mornings, and finish tasks I’ve procrastinated all year long. I love, love, love, a change of pace. Can I get an “amen”?

“You made summer and winter and gave them to the earth." Psalm 74:17 (CEV)

I also feel God’s presence in summer in a different way. When things are quieter on the outside of my life, it’s easier for me to be quiet on the inside. To tune out the noise and tune in God’s kind voice. I find myself wanting to bottle and save this quiet trust to pour it  over the busy months leading to Christmas. I hope that you have had some quiet this summer. If you haven’t, I’m praying you can create some space for it soon.

Here’s what God is whispering to me in the quiet this summer.

Less is more.

Have you ever noticed that it takes no effort to live a cluttered life? Clutter happens naturally, like weeds in a flower bed. You don’t  plant them, they just grow all by themselves. Clutter is like that. Whether it’s possessions, expectations or calendar obligations, clutter accumulates whether you want it to or not. It effectively gobbles up our time, demands our attention,  and robs us of energy and clarity. We lose track of what we have so we get more. We move fast to get things done but a new “to-do” list crops up every morning. We’re afraid of saying “no,” so “yes” becomes our default.  It’s soul-numbing.

The only way to deal with clutter is to be intentional about cleaning it out.  It’s a discipline. You have to purge. Often. I firmly believe that clearing out the clutter (mental, emotional, physical) is an essential life skill. It is how we begin discerning  what is  essential.. Having less to think about, to do, and to maintain restores our souls.

The office staff engaged in a physical clutter-buster project  in June with the help of my dear friend and professional organizer Kim Bignon.   Ahhhh. It feels awesome. I don’t know if we will fully cross the finish line before the start of the school, but the progress so far is energizing. I want to encourage each of you to do this in your own classroom BEFORE the busyness of the school year sets in. Check out the “Triple Cone” for 3 inspiring blog posts to spur you on.

As we gently look ahead to the start of the school year, the “Flavor of the Month” contains all the dates and details you need to know about what’s expected of teachers and staff in August.  Click the provided links to confirm your participation as prompted.

By the way, this is the second installment of “The Scoop.” Ha! Ha! I created it last summer with grand idea of sending a newsletter  to you every other month but ended up sending only ONE. Oh, well. I’m trying again and we’ll see how I do this year.

Finally, I want to give you the heads up that we will be adding a staff morning prayer time every day of school from 8:45-8:50am. That’s something else God has been whispering to me about.  Details about location and logistics  to come, but start thinking about how you will re-arrange your mornings to make room for group prayer.

Summer lovin’ to all of you!
