Lent and Easter

Lord I lift your name on high.

Lord I love to sing your praises.

I'm so glad you are in my life.

I'm so glad you came to save us.

You came from heaven to earth, to show the way.

From the earth to the cross, my debt to pay.

From the cross to the grave, from the grave to the sky,

Lord I lift your name on high.

-“Lord I Lift Your Name on High” by Rick Founds

As my children and I sang the above lyrics on the way to WDS last week, I couldn’t help but smile…at the sounds of their voices, at the incredible, unconditional love that is proclaimed in the song, and especially at how God is always using my kids to teach me. I am a Type-A, over-planner, who hasn’t met a color-coded calendar I don’t adore, but sometimes this trait causes me to over-think. I had been pondering ways to teach my children and talk to them about Lent and Easter before the season began. All along, the Easter message was in front of me, coming right out of their mouths. Instead of making things over-complicated, I used what my kids (and the Lord) were already giving me – the song.  I gave some age-appropriate definitions and examples of “debt,” discussed miracles and their relationship to “grave to sky”  (and no-one second-guessed this at all…ah, to have the faith of a child…again, MY KIDS TEACHING ME), and soaked in the waving of little hands from side-to-side as we “lifted the Lord’s name on high.”

May your Lenten season be blessed with special, simple moments as a family.
